It's That Time of the Year!

   Lambing has started for the year! So far I have gotten a ewe and a ram lamb from Davina. They are simply darling! However, I have already sold them. I have sold the lambs, Davina, and Tank to a person that is wanting to get started with sheep. So, ram hunting once more. All of my ewes are expecting, looking forward to what is to come in lambing 2014!

As you can see, I got a gullie ewe, just like I wanted. But, I decided I would part with her.

Hello all! This is my new blog! This blog will be dedicated to give you news about my Shetland herd. My goals as a Shetland breeder: (1) Ewes with good mothering instinct and produce enough milk for their young. (2) I want polled (unable to grow horns) rams and ewes in my flock. (3) Soft fleeces! This is a must! I like an intermediate and kindly fleece. I personally do not care for the double coated fleeces, but each to his own. (4) Eventually, I would like to get Shetlands with spotted fleeces. I find them very attractive! Who doesn't like spotted animals? (5) I  do not want my sheep to be BIG. They Are Getting Close!

   My ewes getting closer and closer to lambing. I was told when I bought Davina that she wouldn't lamb until Mid-April. I think she's closer than her former owners thought. She has got a big bag already, and she's as fat as I'll get out. I hope to get a grey ewe out of her, since the sire of this lamb is a grey. Davina has AMAZING crimp to her fleece, and I'm hoping she'll pass it to her offspring. Alberta is right behind Davina. She is just as fat, if not bigger than Davina. I counted the days, and she is due and of this month, beginning of April. Her bag isn't as big as Davina's, but its getting there. Bar is pretty big too. All of them look big except for Rose. I believe Rose is bred, but I think she may have a single. You never can tell. I know sheep and goats are different, but I had a nanny last year throw triplets and she didn't look like she was carring even one! We thought the nanny wasn't bred at all.     All of my sheep have such d...

Lamb Names

   I have names for three out of the four lambs thus far. Like most Shetland breeders, I chosen a theme in which to name my lambs :  Famous Children Lit. Names.    I named the first ewe pictured below Lil' Hopper's   Velvet from the book National Velvet. The next ewe I named Lil' Hopper's Black Beauty. (Note: The North American Shetland Sheep Association requires all registered lambs to have flock prefixs, mine is Lil' Hopper's) The little ewe lamb from Alberta is Lil' Hoppers Winn-Dixie.    I need help on the ram, any ideas?
