Breeding Plans for This Fall (ALREADY???)

Since I do not have a big flock, I have already decided who will be bred to who this fall. Provided Pete Moss is not AG, I will be keeping him. Tank will have most of my ewes.

Pete Moss:
LostLakeFarm Davina

I would put Davina with Tank and sell Pete Moss, but she needs to have her fleece improved in a BIG way. Her lambs from this spring are ok, but they are a tad too coarse for my liking. I will be keeping them as well, in hopes to improve them. From all indications thus far, Pete Moss is polled; I do not see or feel any scurs. I have no idea if Davina carries poll, so I will have a 50% chance of getting a polled sheep if she's breed to Pete Moss. If she were bred to Tank, who is scurred, she would only have a 25% of throwing poll. I am honestly hoping to get a spotted ewe from the Pete Moss + Davina combo. Davina carries spots.

Tank:
Underhill Bar
Lil' Country Moss Rose
Lil' Country Alberta

My plan is to keep Pete Moss for next years breeding so he can be bred to Davina, Velvet and Black Beauty and improve their fleeces. After that, I will probably sell him and buy another good quality ram. Pete Moss is related to most of my stock, so I can't keep him as long as I might like to. (If I find a good ram before this fall, I may sell Pete Moss.)  Have a good day!

Hello all! This is my new blog! This blog will be dedicated to give you news about my Shetland herd. My goals as a Shetland breeder: (1) Ewes with good mothering instinct and produce enough milk for their young. (2) I want polled (unable to grow horns) rams and ewes in my flock. (3) Soft fleeces! This is a must! I like an intermediate and kindly fleece. I personally do not care for the double coated fleeces, but each to his own. (4) Eventually, I would like to get Shetlands with spotted fleeces. I find them very attractive! Who doesn't like spotted animals? (5) I  do not want my sheep to be BIG. Some people breed them up for the show ring, but I like them as the small breed they are. I hope you enjoy this blog!:)

Four Fewer?

I was able to sell four of my Shetlands, my two ram lambs from this spring, Martina and Alberta, a couple of my ewes. I hadn't planned on selling Alberta, and I had Martina listed for sale, but I really didn't need to sell either them. But, these were the two I was willing to let go. This leaves me with nine sheep, eight ewes and a ram... four fewer.    Since I am selling Pete Moss, I will be breeding Davina to Tank. This will probably be the last lambing season I will keep Davina, I will most likely sell her after she lambs. She is getting up in age , and she isn't my finest fleeced ewe. She isn't old, but she is getting there. I have also entertained the idea of selling Tank after this coming spring. If I were to get a Gullie ewe from him out of Moss Rose, I would be more than happy to sell him. I would hope for a Gullie from Moss Rose, and not my other ewes, as she is my best fleeced mature ewe.    It sure seems li...

Been A Long Time!

Its been a long time since I've graced this blog with my presence, much longer than I had ever intended. Spring of 2014, I had a total of 11 lambs, all sired by Three Creeks Tank. I only kept one lamb from the bunch, Mossburg, who I used as flock sire this past fall. I sold several of my mature ewe and am down to the small total of four. This summer I intend to increase my herd again, but for the time being, I felt it best to decrease my flock. I will try to be more diligent about posting. Bye for now!
